glueing veneer to backer board
« on: August 03, 2011, 11:26:54 pm »
I scrolled out the Cheetah pattern from Creative woodworks and Crafts Aug issue.
My question, is it a good idea to glue walnut veneer to a backer board and then glue the veneer / backer board to the 3/8s birds eye maple?
I wood first finnish useing BLO and spray finnish. hope this makes sense.

Hey Jim, It's important to understand that if you apply veneer to one side of a substrate, you have to apply a veneer to the other side, even if the substrate is plywood. The issue is moisture absorption. If you don't address this issue, your backer board can warp.
It may be easier to buy some walnut plywood or stain a piece of oak plywood.

Dan is right about the issue of moisture absorption. You can also just seal the other side of the backer/substrate real good.  Varnish, clear lacquer, poly.  ;)

I do have some 6" walnut. I will just have to edge and thickness plane it and glue it to get 9"
Thanks for the info.
