Oval Bowl project question
« on: August 04, 2011, 09:47:22 am »
I am from Kansas and have just joined you site and this is my second year of getting the hang of the art of scrolling.  Thanks Steve so much for all the hard work you do helping us new scrolling sawers get started.

Steve I have just cut out the oval bowl from your pattern site.  I used  3/4 red oak wood.  I drilled the holes at 20 degrees and then set my dewalt scroll saw at 20 degrees and cut out the eccentircs.

My question is how and what kind of sander do you recommend to use to finish the project.  Do you glue up the rings and sand them before you glue the 3 rings to the base or what?

God bless and thanks again

Welcome to the forum, John.  I'm Julie from Texas.  On your bowl, glue up the side rings without putting on the bottom yet.  Get the inside of the bowl to your liking.  If you have a spindle sander or a drum sander on a flex shaft is the easiest way, if not, a simple drum on your drill press will do.  They also make an inflatable sanding drum that is fantastic.  Anyway, get the inside to your likeing and then attach the bottom.  Then sand the outside to where you want it.  It's a little time consuming but well worth the effort for a beautiful bowl.
