You should use capital letters or add some underline. Which word is it that you can't make up?

I responded on another forum, but it might be helpful here also.
By text that will stand alone, do you mean squished together letters? If you do, I put together a tutorial about how I do it using OpenOffice Draw (a free program similar to Microsoft Office) The principles are the same in other software programs, but the menus and choices will look different. Sorry the teacher in me comes out in making things like this.
Hope it helps.

Find the PDF here on google documents, it is a bit to large to share here.

Katie! I even use the same screen capturing tool
I do it similar, sometimes I use single letters that I can position the way I want.
@ pauley
How about this underline. It's the text like Katie has done it. The red is a rectangle with rounded corners (check the shapes on OpenOffice for that) and the white center is the same rectangle in a smaller size.
You can position the objects on top of others by clicking right and "order" them "in front" or "in back". You can also "align" things and automatically "position" them (*).
Just play a bit around, this is a really fine tool for making up patterns!
*naming might vary, I currently only have a German version of OO running.

Katie....is "Squishing" part of the new curricula in our schools these days?
Very effective use of the idea as used in the title of your treatise.
From a 'printing and readability' standpoint I must say the the use of sans serif type in manuals and texts is frowned upon. Serif fonts tend to be more easily read and understood. Not just my 40+ yrs in the printing business but it has been scientifically proven.
Ouch, I cut myself! That's not blood its INK!
