Hi Guys & Gals & Gabby.
When making one off toys requiring many small one off components of say 3" in length I seem to waste inordinate amounts of wood trying to get the right dimentions as my thicknesser will only take about 2' minimum length without putting life and limb in peril. I am sure you all have your methods and I would be interested to find out how?

When I need to plane a board that is to short for the planer I use runners. That is I will mount two scrap runners that are long enough on either side of your board. I use a hot glue gun to mount the runners. The hot glue sets up instantly and is easy to remove after you run it through the planner. Just make sure the runners are the same thickness as your board and plane equal amounts of wood from either side.

I don't really have any advise, but I try to pay close attention to the plan and figure out as many parts that need to be the same size and cut them at the same time.

I also make jewelry, so most of what I waste on one project I use in others.

Here in the UK, Being thick is applied to someone who is easily confused and a thicknesser is a teacher who adds to that confusion. Someone who is a few cents short of a dollar. I am sure it doesn't apply to you though Gabby

Using a runner or backer on a planner works well. A thickness sander (drum sander) works also. My sander will run a piece 3" long. If the piece is small you can mount a sanding drum in a drill press, attach a board as a fence and feed it through against the rotation of the drum to create a mini drum sander (saw the idea in a magazine recently).
