What to Do for a Doctor?
« on: May 27, 2011, 07:34:18 am »
Folks, I have had a doctor for the past 19 years that has saved my life more than once. He is an oncologist that has diagnosed multiple cancers I have had and caught them early enough to put them in remission. I have been written up in a National Magazine called "The Spirit" and other publications outlining my condition.If you would like to read that article, the publisher sent me an electronic copy and I placed it on my site: (www.woodartbysam.com/UncleSam.pdf).

This doctor and I have become friends over the years. Sorry to say, he just told me he is retiring in about 5 weeks. I would like to do something in woodwork to show my appreciation to him. I am not that good at scrollsawing, I'm learning. The big question is "what can I do?".  When I first started to scrollsaw, I did a Caduceus for him.

If you have any ideas, please let me know. Pictures would be helpful and if you have a template, that would be great.

Thanks,
Sam

The first thought I had is some who could do a pattern of a Dr. in his lab coat hanging his stethescope on a peg with a simple "RETIRED" underneath.

~~~GB~~~
I never really wanted to grow up....All I wanted was to be able to reach the cookie jar...and play with my DW 788
I'd say that you'd want it to be something very personal.
In that light I'd suggest an personalized wooden pen. If you are a pen maker, you can find a laser engraver who will engrave the message on one of your pieces. Otherwise, you can Google for a pen maker who have it engraved for you. If I was still in the business (which I'm not) I'd charge about $80 for an engraved pen, plus shipping.
Good luck,
Chachi
First off, great story and congratulations at being a fighter.
I have two ideas, the first would be to do a portrait style picture of a medical symbol with the words retired somewhere on it. Medical symbols I'm thinking of are like Da Vinci's human body, or the medical cross with the wings and snakes wrapped around it.
My other idea would be to ask for a piece to be made from members like "Intarsia92" "Charles Dearing', etc., and pay them for the piece. I don't think it lessens the specialness of the gift if you don't actually make it.
Hope this helps, and good luck with the project.
