alien, The clamp is holding the table mount. In checking the front to back movement of the blade, I found, as is the case for most type II DeWalt saws, that the blade does not move perfectly up and down. It is square to the table from side to side, but not front to back. I found that if you move the rear table mount up a little, it helps correct this problem. I'm still playing with how to fix this permanently. For now the clamp is holding the clamp mount to the saw.
As for building a cabinet for the stand, No. I rest my feet on the lower brace of the stand, so a cabinet would be in the way.
If you look at the light mount, it actually holds my lighted magnifier light on the left side and another light on the right. I had that light removed to take the picture.
