New from Michigan
« on: April 25, 2011, 04:49:29 am »
Hello everyone!

I'm new.  I'm an 61 year old male, waiting for 62 so I have an income (SS).  I love woodworking, and bought a scroll saw to help me with that.  I  have had a 16? Delta for a few years now.  I live in Michigan, and do not have a heated shop, so I have been waiting for warm weather to really get anything going.

I started using a scroll saw 50 years ago.  I used to take pictures of people and glue them on a piece of plywood, then cut out the profile with the scroll saw.  I would take these profiles and maybe some props from the same pic. And glue the 'standing up? to a base and make a lamp out of them.

I lost contact with the scroll saw for about 45 years until I was making a chest on chest and wanted to make some fine detail additions.  Frankly, the saw has seen little use.  About 2 years ago, I move the saw into a spare room at my home and started making things with it.  My son is into dragons, so I made a number of dragon wall placks as gifts to him, and even made some cut out lamps as gifts

Soon I hope to get into a lot more just for the enjoyment.  I plan to buy a better saw soon (as I get some money) and was delighted when I saw Steve had picked up an Excalibur.  This is the saw I thought I wanted, and I sign on 4-5 times a day to see if he has done his test yet.

I have some problems with the Delta which I hope will be addressed when I get a new saw.  One the the worst for me is that the blade does not move straight up and down.  I guess this make the saw cut faster, but for my eyes it makes it VERY hard to see where the blade is.  I HATE the clips on the Delta.  Trying to make interior cuts soon becomes a real chore because it takes me 10 min to get the blade in the new hole and hooked back up.  A lot of my problem comes from the fact that I use tiny blades.  I think the biggest blade I own is a #2 and most of my blades are 00s.

Is there any where in the forum that you have ?road tests??  I was wondering mostly because I want to try other blades and would love to get something to base my order on.  I was recently cutting some small letters out of thin plastic, so I got some crown tooth blades.  These work great on plastic by the way.  I wanted to cut something for a bird house, and as I already had a blade in the saw, I used it on cutting some wood.  For me, it was great!  The crown tooth blade cut a little slower then the skip tooth I had been using for wood, (good for me who has a big problem seeing his blade) and the finish was great!  I'd love to see a ?road test? of a number of different blades side by side.

Hope to ?talk? to a lot of you in the upcoming moths!

Craig

Hi Craig, Welcome from southern California. I'm Dan, Come on in and join the fun!
There is no specific place for blade reviews. However if you contact Mike as posted above, he will be able to go over the Flying Dutchman blades with you. I also use Olsen blades. You can contact www.sloanswoodshop.com. They carry Olsen blades and are happy to assist you with your needs.
Personally, I use mostly the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse blades and the Olsen Reverse blades in sizes of 0/2 to #9.

Welcome Craig.
There are a number of test drives on the forum, it will just take a while to find them.
I suffer from the same problem seeing the blade and having it double up. (Delta 40-540). Shift your position around until you only see it straight edge on. You will probably benefit from a magnifier lense of your choice. Several of us use the lighted adjustable lamps with a 3 or 4 inch lense. Some use the head mounted kind with an adjustable headband. Light is important to eliminate shadows and make everything more clear. There are a number of LED lights available that can be clipped to your glasses or ball cap also and they are BRIGHT! Pretty cheap too.
I'm working in a carport whenever it gets up around 60 Deg. and the wind isn't too strong.
The boss won't let me in the house with it.   :'(
I'm in agreement the Flying Dutchman blades work much better than Olson the only other brand available in my podunk little town. Mike gets your order right out.
Any problem you are having all you have to do is shout and several someones will answer up.
Boss just said dinner is served bye...
