Need a Little Advice For a Newbie

Ok i need a little help here my new scroller friends what would be the best blades to start out using in order to get adjusted to using my new Delta SS350 saw?  remember im very used to using tools but not a Scroll Saw, Thanks in advance, Rob

I use only Flying Dutchman blades from Mike at Mike's Workshop. You can go to his web site and check them out. Give him a call or drop him an e-mail he will help you make the right choices.

Hey Rob, I'm a scroll saw instructor at Woodcraft in Ventura, Ca. I start beginners on 3/4 pine with an Olsen #5 skip tooth blade. I use Olsen's because that is what the store carries. If you have ordered Flying Dutchman blades, then still use a #5 of what ever you ordered. Start out with 3/4" pine. Draw a few straight lines, Some curvy lines then some zig zag lines just to get started. Don't worry about cutting shapes until you can cut the practice lines. Start with that, then check back with us for more advice!

thank you i will do, the guy that i bought my saw from gave me a pack of (4) olson Mach speed  8 tpi, 6 rv,.055",.018 thick  im talking to mike through emails now.

FD'S are good blades and the service from Mike is excellent, I was using Olsen but I think the FD is better, I like the skip tooth reverse as it  cuts well and suits my style

I use both Flying Dutchman and Olson blades.  When I start someone out, I also start them on 3/4 boards with #5 blades.  It's a good place to get the "feel" of where you are going without wasting your good wood.  Best of luck and Happy Scrolling.

I like the Olson #5 reverse-tooth blades for doing straight lines, ovals and circles.  If you are going to start to do turns and corners, switch to the #2 reverse-tooth.  They follow really well where you need to go.

thanks everyone i will take the help, im new at this so all the help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!   i just ordered the assortment pack from Mike so i'll be messing around a bit on my saw today with the Olsen blades that the guy gave me when i bought my saw.   i should have overnight-ed my foot pedal  that i ordered....lol

My only recommendation, is don't order a gross of any blade size until you know what kind of blades you like using, I did this when I first started and ended up with a bunch blades I never used. I use a combination of both FD and Olsen. Warning scrolling becomes addicting.

The FD sampler pack is a good place to start.  The Olson Mach blade cuts a lot differently than a lot of other blades in that it has left drift.  You will find that some blades really want the workpiece to feed about 15 degrees to the left in order to cut a 'straight' line.  The reverse teeth can cause the workpiece to try and jump, which is why the instructors don't start people on reverse blades.  My experience is that the smaller blades work better for smooth finish and tight turns, and larger blades are easier for straight lines.

I was converted from Olsen to FD Ultra Reverse #3's!!  I do mainly small ornaments.

Grab a piece of wood and order a sample pack and try each one. After a little while you will develope a feel for which blade does what.Just give yourself a little time.
