Painting / Finishing question....

I'm doing some Christmas stuff out of Aspen and I want to apply a "sort of White" finish but not paint it.
Would like for 'some' of the grain to show through.
I guess it would be called a 'wash'.

Any recipes?

If the aspen is white,(as it should be) I would recomend clear shellac.

White wood stain, should be able to pick it up at the paint shop

Hi, GB!  There is a product made by DecoArt called "Staining and Antiquing Medium".  You mix it with acrylic paint and it will make any paint into a semi-transparent stain.  If you want more grain to show through, just use more of the medium.  It is inexpensive and odorless and does a great job. This is on their website but it is available at any place where acrylic paints are sold, such as Michael's and Hobby Lobby.  I think it will do what you need it to.

Yes GB shellac will yellow over time.

Sheila took the words right out of my mouth.  It will give you a very nice wash effect.  If you want a sealer other than shelac - use a spar urethane labeled for indoor/outdoor use.  It has a UV protectant.  I use minwax helmsman spar urethane on almost all of my projects.
