Need Some Help Please - Angles
« on: November 09, 2010, 08:33:49 pm »
I've decided to give Steve's large Nativity pattern a go.

http://www.stevedgood.com/nativity.pdf

Over the weekend I cut all the people and the critters but now I am looking at the stable.  The pattern says you have to miter or sand the two pieces of the roof and the tops of the side walls so it all fits together.  I thought I would just tilt the table of my saw and miter them that way but I am at a loss as to how to determine what angle I need to set the table at to make all the pieces work right.  And it's all got to match up with the front piece that you put on the roof.

Can someone please explain how to calculate that?  I'm sure that this will come up again at some point so knowing how to do it is bound to come in handy.

Thanks.

Hey Becky, I used a protractor on the screen, and it looks like you will need to set  your blade at 15 degrees. Try it on some scrap and adjust accordingly.

Thanks, Dan.  I used a protractor on the pattern and it looked to be about 30* but then I went and confused myself on if each piece should get half of that or if everything had to be 30*.

Math never was my strong suit.

If you cut each half 15 degrees, you get  30!
Now if you can help me figure out how to add the degree symbol, That would be great!

Dan, had a we play.
I use a Notebook (laptop) the row of numbers along the top, the #8 key has an Astrix press Shift and the 8key together, is as close as you can get unless some-one proves me wrong, (which does happen from time to time).

To add the degree sign " ? " in your post, first make sure your Num Lock is on. Then while holding down the Alt key type 0176 in the numpad. Ta-da the degree symbol.  8)

Yeah, I just used the asterisk.  I knew there was an ASCII degree sign as Russ has described but it would have taken forever to trial & error myself to finding the right number for it.

As to the 15* + 15* = 30*, that is quite logical and a possiblity I had considered but I didn't know if that was the right formula or if I should do 90-15 or 180 - 15 or even just make both angles equal 30.  But it occurs to me now that two 45* angles make a 90* corner.

I officially give myself a DUH on this one, lol.   ;)
