To All "Would-Be Electricians" ! ! !

When you decide to install a "waterproof" outdoor 'device' box for a receptacle, GFCI, or light switch or anything else PLEASE remember that it will only be "WaterProof" if you use ALL the necessary parts that came with it.

I just averted a fire at the next door neighbor's house by rushing inside and shutting of the circuit breaker feeding his outdoor lighting circuit!

He decided to power wash his vinyl siding and hosed down the receptacle box and kept going around the corner. I was cleaning my patio and noticed smoke coming from under his deck. I ran over and sure enough the smoke was coming from the 'waterproof' receptacle box so I ran inside, flipped the necessary breaker, grabbed the extinguisher and applied it to the box and surrounding conduit.
Fortunately I saw it before the 'fire' had traveled up inside the conduit to the inside of the house.

As we took the box off the wall and examined it I asked where the 'gasket' that completes the seal was since I didn't see any charred remains.
His rather shy answer, "Oh hell I didn't think that thing was necessary!"

So he is now at Lowes buying all the necessary conduit, fittings, box and wire so we can replace it all CORRECTLY.

All damage (minor) was confined to the outside of the house, the inside of the conduit and one fixture. Some new conduit, wire and fittings along with a little paint will fix it all up.

Electricity and Gas (natural or propane) are wonderful and have been harnessed for our convenience.
HOWEVER, they can turn into vicious killers if not handled correctly and with the greatest respect.

If you don't know exactly what you are doing with them PLEASE ask or hire someone who does know.

I have to tell the active and retired firefighters here...That adrenaline rush sure made the training I had 30 years ago pop to the front of my memory bank so I could act.

NOPE! I just didn't want to have all those firefighters invading my garden!

They would have had to pull a line right through my tamaters and herbs to get it close to the site.

All I had was a 20# CO2, which my neighbor has promised to have re-filled!

My greatest hope is that at least ONE person reads this and realizes the importance of really knowing what to do both in installing something like he had and how to react when they come upon a similar situation.
The neighbor came running when i hollered and was about to spray more WATER on the box until I hollered for him not to. Imagine the surprise he might have gotten when that water stream hit the live wires!

I saw that it was a minor thing but knew I had to kill the power to the box or it would keep feeding on itself until the 'breaker' finally tripped from the overload. By then it could have been inside the wall and become a real problem.

Good Training and some common sense sure paid off.

It's a wonder he didn't electocute himself. Good thing you was there, he could have lost his home and everything in it. It's a wonder how you learn these basic Firefighting skills years ago, and in the time of need, they come back to you, like it was yesterday. Good job. Dave 8)

I worked at a big box hardware store for years as a power tool specialist.  Because I was certified in electrical and plumbing, I got drug there often, either when the associate didn't know the answer or they were short help.  I always told people to never short cut electrical or plumbing.  Doing it half-a$$ed would bite them.  Bad plumbing will ruin your house slowly and bad electrical will ruin your house quickly.  Good on ya for recognizing what was going on.

good job GB. as a retired electrician of over 40 years, I could tell you of many near misses. people become familiar with electricity and do not respect it or realize what it is capable of doing, the worst are the self taught that don't really know but don't know they don't know and convince family and friends to let them do wiring that ends up costing more to fix than it would have in the first place.
