« on: August 18, 2010, 09:07:28 am »
I am a bit of computer illiterate, just got the nack of downloading zipped files, unpacking them and saving the contence. Now I think it is save to delete the origanal downloads, but I am not sure. I reason as I have saved it to my harddrive it should be ok. Can anybody enlighten me please?

If you unpacked the file and saved the content then you can safely delete the zip file.

I agree, once unzipped you can delete them. Or if you have enough room, I store them with other information I might need in case of a hard drive crash and burn them to a data dvd.  8)

David - here is my method F Y I ....

I have several "Folders" on my desktop and ALL downloads go to my Desktop.
Example of Folders, ScrollSaw, DownLoads, Trials, Utilities, etc.

Download the Zip file
Extract and set up or install the files
Navigate to the Desktop
Take the Zipfile and 'Move' it into the appropriate Folder
Sunday morning while listening to the news and having my coffee I
copy all the folders to my external Hard Drive AND write them to a Data CD/DVD (all HardDrives can fail and I buy CD's and DVD's in the 100 pkg. so they are cheap and the old ones make great TARGETS)

I do however likely download and try many, many more things than the average person so this is a bit of 'overkill' for the general public!

I never really wanted to grow up....All I wanted was to be able to reach the cookie jar...and play with my DW 788

If anyone has much to do at all on a computer an external hard drive is a must have. They have them priced pretty low now. I saw a 1 terabyte at Best Buy for around $100 a while back. Keep it plugged in and copy your important files to it. I always have at least one connected. I can reload my computer or buy a new computer and have it just like it is now is about an hour. People are always telling me that they don't have that much important stuff on their computer. We keep talking and then they say they have some photos they want to keep. Sometimes photos are irreplaceable and it is worth the small price for an external hard drive. Especially in hind sight after they are gone.

I have two external hard drives. One for my home computer and one for my laptop. I use them as temporary storage. You have to remember that they are hard drives to and can crash. That is why I put some thing on data DVDs. I think they will last for 50 years or more.   8)
