Finishing Christmas Ornaments

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for ideas on how some of you might have finished Steve Good's custom Christmas ornaments for last year.  This is the one with three layers - back:  house and tree; middle: snowman and front: name and year.  I have 35 of these cut out, ready to finish and assemble (I left off the year so I could use them for this year).  I've cut them all out of 1/8" Baltic Birch and I'm in a bit of a dilemma as to how to finish them before assembly. 

For some of you who made these, did you leave them natural (lacquer or oil), stain them or use some other finish?  Any suggestions (pictures) would be greatly appreciated.

I made 20 of these as I use them as place marks at Christmas Dinner. 

I sprayed with glitter gold.  I have tried the Glitter Blast but prefer the Rustoleum brand.  I do each layer separately.  Able to scratch off a little spot for the separator to be glued and once glued give a little blast to get the out side of the separator.

If the glitter is flaking off at all I spay with Glitter sealer.

Lots of work but I stack cut 5 at a time.  For the name I have to cut the flakes and then do the names one at a time.

Hopefully 2016 will be less work.

Those look really nice.  Thanks for the picture. 

You're right, they were a lot of work.  I stack cut them too but only did three at a time.  I thought I'd glue the spacers on the middle and back layers before spraying and then scrape the tops of the spacers for final assembly.  That way the edges would already be done.

i can't find those patterns anywhere; they don't come up with searches for Christmas, Snowman, 2015, Layered, anything

I assume they're on Steve's site catalog? Can you give me a pointer please.

These patterns came from Steve when he offered his annual personalized ornaments.  Cost was $1 minimum $5.

In 2015 he did twice.  Once with the snowman and once with Santa.

I ordered both times and then mixed and matched for families and the kids.

There is a layered ornament in Steve's catalog.  Just search for layered or browse category ornaments.

I put mine altogether then finish by dipping mineral oil, hang to dry for a few days.  Glue the spacers to the middle section first so that I can make sure they line up.

That's a good idea to apply spacers to both sides of the middle section.

Those look awesome!  Alot of tedious work with the letters!  You do great work!
