The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Segu?n.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico's Independence Day?the most important national holiday in Mexico?which is celebrated on September 16

Really the day is April 12, and is not a day of celebration but a day of morning.  You see, Mexicans had become very fond of Mayonnaise in the early 1900's.   So the whole country got together and ordered 100,000 cases to be shipped to them.  The main factory that could handle such an order was in England and the only ship big enough at the time was the Titanic.  It was such a heartbreak when the catastrophic event occur.  So sad.  :'(  :'(
