HELPPP!!! A "Sticky" Question......(OR 2)
« on: December 30, 2014, 05:55:36 am »
Hi!  Can anyone tell me what glue is best for sticking together a 2 part project where we have a cut out piece to stick onto a backing??  My guess would be Aleens Tacky Glue, but again, is that the Original or the "Turbo"?  I'm a newbie to scroll sawing, though I have been Turning Wood for a while & loving working with woods of all kinds.

Thanks in advance, I'm sure some kind soul will give me the answer.   :)

May I wish EVERYONE a peaceful & happy 2015.

Keith, I used Aleens original and it didn't hold so well. I think you have to spray both surfaces to get a good permanent bond. I then used 3M 77 spray and it seems to be holding quite well. I only use it on small projects. For larger projects I use Aleens but not the spray. I just put a dab on my finger and spread it very thin on the fretwork.

If your fretwork and backer are both wood, it's hard to beat wood glue like Titebond spread thin on the fretwork. Titebond III is rated 3500 psi - stronger than the wood. You need to add some weight on top to get the best bond, and need to keep it light so you don't get a lot of squeeze out to clean up. You don't need to cover the full fretwork with glue - the outer border and larger peninsulas (big pieces with little support) will do it.

If the backer is painted so wood glue cannot penetrate, clear epoxy can be spread thin on the fretwork. 5 minute epoxy is rated 2500 psi and will fill in voids better than wood glue.

I second the titebond for wood projects
The glues I use are titebond (original)- titebond (outdoor use) - and Elmer's carpenter's weather tite wood glue.
I use the titebond glues more then the Elmer's, but have had no problems with any of these.

A.  I spray paint the backer board.

B.  Make the interior cuts of the fretwork.

C.  Spread Elmer's Glue All on a sheet of wax paper.  Spread the glue evenly with a credit card.  Set the unfinished fretwork on the glue & rotate SLIGHTLY to get good coverage.  Set it on the backer board and weight it down.  Do not use too much glue, as it would squeeze into the sawed out areas.

D.  Saw the perimeter.

To see examples, go to page 2 of the "Gallery" on this site & look for "jerry1939."

What ever glue you choose, make sure it dries clear.  I like Jerry's way - I haven't tried it yet but it sure sounds like you would get pretty even coverage.  Next fretwork piece - I'm going to try it.

I use thick CA glue, it dries clear so you won't see it after you apply finish.

Thanks for the tips folks!  I have plenty of Titebond in my workshop, so will give that a try first.....but first I'm having to wait for my saw to arrive.  I've gone for a new model from "Axminster" (RSS16E) here in the UK, but it won't be available for a couple of weeks yet, will prob' be mid Jan when it arrives.

Happy New Year to everyone!
