New to the Scroll Saw HELP
« on: December 24, 2014, 02:23:16 pm »
HELLO!
I am new to this Scroll Saw world. I find it to be very fascinating and good for the mind. I would like to start out making NAMES and Key Chains
Could some one tell me what kind of wood should i use and if there is a supplier online. I have a Home Depot but we have very limited resources down here in the Fl Keys. Please Help Me.
Thank you
Geoff

When you first start any wood will do.  With what you are doing it should probably be a little harder wood.  Just press ure thumb nail into a piece of wood and you don't see an imprint the wood will work.  Home depot should have that kind of wood.  Just figure the size you need and there you go.  Good Luck

I prefer tight grain hardwoods like Maple or Cherry. They are harder to cut than some of the other common hardwoods but the results are good. Poplar is a good "starter" wood for the scroll saw, softer than Maple or Cherry but harder than pine. Not as pretty IMO. Balck Walnut works well on the scroll saw if you can get it and like dark wood. Baltic Birch plywood is also used often for scroll sawing. I have fould that pine is not the best for scroll sawing small stuff, breaks too easily.  It also depends on what you have available in your area. I'm from NY and harvest a lot of my own trees for lumber. Hopefully a forum member from your area will chime in.

I use  http://ocoochhardwoods.com/index.php.  They have many different kinds and sizes of wood and Baltic birch plywood.  Their customer service is great and shipping is fast.  Hope this helps.
Merry Christmas
