A question of Staining

I (as usual) have a question. When staining a fretwork piece what is the best way to get the stain into the cut out edges? My experience with this has been on heck of a mess so far. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I've done it two ways:

1) a small paint brush dipped in the stain and applied to the edges.

2) pouring the stain in a shallow pan or tray (i.e. dollar store cookie pan, Goodwill, etc.) and then laying the project in the stain.  Remove the project and lay on a cloth and put another on top to remove excess stain.  If necessary used compressed air or a small paint brush to remove remaining stain from the smaller spaces.

I dip mine and wipe the excess as well.

If you have something that can't be dipped, you can use pipe cleaners. to get stain into little holes.

Cheap foam brushes work very well because you can squeeze the stain out of the brush into
the cut-outs. I would imagine a cheap kitchen sponge would work just as well but, I often
use the cheap, throw-away foam brushes and paper towels.

Well, I dipped today and it worked good. I have to wonder what the next batch of brownies are gonna taste like though. Tired of lacquer for a top coat
want to try something else this time.

Well if you lived in the state Washington you could add a little something to those brownies that would make it so you don't care what they taste like!!
