It's probably of no help in this case, but PDF's can be opened directly in Inkscape.

honestly how many times does it happen were you do something for weeks, months or even years, in a certain way then suddenly someone says but if you do this its easier. The term "university of life" springs to mind.
So yes you can open a PDF directly into Inkscape, and that's great as long as you dont need to take anything out, so it prompted me to try the obvious, and following my tantrum on the office floor
You can also do it directly into GIMP
