mounting word art?

Hi. Just wondering how you guys mount word art to the bases I see them sitting on? You using glue? Of so what kind? ? Or are you using screws? (Afraid they would split word art?) Thanks a bunch your the best steve!

Some I use a dowel, others I dado a groove for the word art to rest in. No glue necessary.

I generally use glue to attach words to a base. If you have it sitting on a shelf or desk and it needs to be moved (to dust or something) it will be picked up by the "words" and the base will come with it and not be another thing that has to be picked up.
I would recommend any wood glue that you currently use. It is a good idea to make sure that it is a wood to wood bond with out any finish separating it. However, considering that it is basically a static item and won't be subjected to a lot of pressure, I suppose a bit of stain or penetrating oil wouldn't present much of a problem.

You can use a dowel. I used a 1/4" dowel on the World's Great Dad tribute designed by Steve. The nice thing about using a dowel is that you can line up the fretwork to the base. I used regular  wood glue on dowel and fretwork bottom and clamped using spring clamps.

I use the smallest screws possible for the thickness of the word art.
To avoid splitting, pre-drill the holes from the bottom of the base into the
word art and recess the area in the base so the screws do not extend
through the bottom of the base and can strongly attach the word art.
It sounds more complicated than it is.
I put the word art on top of the base in the position I want it.
Mark the areas you want screws to go into the letters of the word art
temporarily (this can just be a small piece of masknig tape to give you a
close proximity to where the hole should be.
I drill the holes into the base, then drill a slight recess with a slightly
larger drill bit than the head of the screw. Then put the screws in so that
only a small tip of the screw point is exposed and press the word art onto the
tips of the screws. You now have an indentation on the word art that shows
where the word art has to be drilled. Of course, before drilling the base you have
to have a close estimation of where the letters in the word art should be so you
don't drill a hole in the base that does not meet one of the letters in your word art.

I should add I don't typically glue my word art to a base as it is more difficult to ship safely.  I ship most of the items I sell, only do 2 craft shows a year anymore.  So I try to keep shipping in mind.  If a customer wants it glued I let them know how to go about it and offer to include a small packet of glue for them.
