Baguette Boards

These are Baguette Boards, meant to hold a long, skinny loaf of French Bread. Black Walnut is 24" long, 3.5" wide; Maple is 26" long, 4" wide. They were made like a 1-ring bowl with a 30 degree angle cut. Just the inside oval cut was made - the outside was left rectangular. After sanding the inside and gluing on the bottom, a table saw was used to trim the outside to a 30 degree angle. To me, that makes it look like a continuous side wall, as if the bowl was gouged rather than assembled. They were given 2 coats of shellac, then paste waxed with 0000 steel wool.

I've seen some of these with cuts through the walls to guide a knife, but I think the bowl shape will hold the crumbs better.

The penny is a 2013, to mark the year (Thanks Triple-B - that's a nice touch).

Now to me that is Original.  Just never heard of something to hold a loaf of French Bread.
Where did this design and was originate from?  Curious....  Great Looking as Your usual.

Danny - I was at a Thanksgiving brunch at a niece's home in Florida and she had one. Her husband's family is from Spain, so I assumed she got it there. One of our Spanish buddies may know it it's from there (Frank?). Her board looked more like a chisel and gouge job, but the scroll saw bowl method seems to work just as well. I liked the rectangular top with oval bottom. Makes a kind of handle to carry it when full of bread or whatever.

Anyway, I liked it and made one in Poplar, Walnut, and Maple for Christmas presents. My beautiful bride has the walnut sitting on the dining room table.

The penny idea I borrowed from Triple-B. Thanks again.

Nice looking bread holders. My only question is how well are you able to 'slice' the bread if it is placed in the holder before slicing? It would seem to me that you would not be able to slice through the loaf completely.

GB - good point. My niece sliced the baguette then put the cut piecec into the baguette board to put them on the table. She also had some cups that fit into the cutout and used the board to bring out coffee.

I've seen some like below (but I didn't make one yet) that have cuts through the walls for a blade to cut the bread, and a place to hold butter or oil. I may try one like that later.
