Looking forward to some of the ideas here for toys and I made a few starters.  The smaller cars (in front) are cut from cherry, whilst the "larger" pickup in the back is from a piece of 2X4 (pine).

I have considered coloring them, but I hate to lose the appearance of the cherry wood.  Oh well, I am guessing the grandkids won't complain.

Looks great Al...I too love the color of the cherry wood.  I cut these too, but I used Aspen that don't have much nice grain so I was able to paint mine without much worry of losing the beauty of the wood.

Looking good Al. I would not paint the cherry - but I would paint the 2x4 pickup. I like the simplicity compared to the designs with fenders etc.

I did some of these with doubled-up oak (1.5" x 2" blank). The weight is nice in them and the wood finishes nicely.

They are awesome! Do you use one piece of dowel for the axels?

Yes, the axles are one piece length of 3/16 dowel rod.  I used some wheels and dowel from Hobby Lobby (had to go back for more   and found that the dowel rod was slightly larger than the hole in the wheel, I would put the cut piece of dowel into my drill and hit it with some sandpaper to take it down to a really snug fit, then glue it up with super glue (wait for the second wheel until you have the axle installed in the car <snicker>.

I now have 12 cars sitting on the router table ready to be delivered to some youngsters.  

Thanks to Toy Makers for the free pattern.  I used that one and a couple of others and theirs is a nice size for youngun's hands.

Ray - thanks for the additional patterns - now I am "required" to go back to the shop and try them  .

They turned out very nice.  I too hate to cover up pretty grain.  The only time I'll paint them is when I use 2x4's.  Even then some of the 2x4's have some nice grain.
