It's Finished
« on: July 14, 2013, 04:06:18 am »
Well it's finished, I must say I would have preferred to have made the bowl as well. If you look closely at the finished picture only the writing around the edge has the black behind it (and a little part of the helicopter skid) the rest he left white so it doesn't show up enough. I would have filled the writing with a black inlace resin, and the helicopter with a red inlace resin (the actual heli is bright red.) When sanded after that the bottom of the bowl would be smooth to the touch, not collect dust in the cuts and it would also have a nice colour to it. but that's just my opinion. You all see what you think?

The plate on the base of the bowl is engraved with   " Presented to HRH The Duchess of Cornwall on the occasion of her birthday on 17th July 2013 by the Cornwall Air Ambulance.   Hand crafted by the Mid Cornwall Turners".
Thanks again to Grampa (Paul) for the pattern.

That looks great.  If you took and put a layer of the clear casting resin in the bottom of the bowl it could fill up all of the nooks and crannies and give you a smooth bottom.  You have done an outstanding job.  Thanks for showing us your work.

Great job to both of you. Fantastic piece of scrollwork

I have never thought of using scroll saw with turned items. I have got some carving chisels to try carving some of my turning work.

Mahendra, It was a piece of Ash the bowl was made from, it had just
started spalting in places, it was finished in "woodturners finishing oil" with a very little oil based stain mixed in to colour it slightly.

Maybe I missed something - is the scroll work cut separately and then attached, or did you scroll cut the bottom of a bowl.  IF the latter is true - how?

I like the appearance, however some color would have added some emphasis to the helicopter.  Especially one used for a formal presentation.

The scroll work looks quite nice, and of course Paul did a fine job with the pattern.

Thanks for showing us the bowl, may the presentation go well.

That's an interesting font with the sideways 'O' and the different looking 'B'. Can I ask where you got it?

Ray, the pattern was kindly made for me by Grampa (Paul), sorry I have no idea what the font was

Keith I think that your idea would have worked better, but still it is a very nice piece.  Congratulations.
