Recommended thickness of wood for welcome signs
« on: June 08, 2013, 07:31:10 am »
I am finally getting back to scrolling and love the recent welcome signs.   What thickness of wood should I use if I do not plan on mounting them on a backer board?

If I'm putting the welcome sign outdoors, I like the look of 3/4". If it's indoors I usually go thinner, maybe 1/4". I think it's a personal preference.

THanks, that's kind of what I thought.

If it is stand alone I use 3/4" inside or outside.  :)

I usually use 3/4 for outside and 1/2" for inside, just my opinion.  edward

I typically make them out of western red cedar and those boards are least expensive when I find them as fence boards on sale (each spring I purchase 10-12 6 foot boards) and stock up.  They are just slightly over 1/2 " and work great.

How about an UNWELCOME Sign...   Door to door salesmen drive us crazy.   I finally put up a sign, with a picture of an angry dog and the words (Our Dogs BITE!, Call Ahead for Appointment).    It seems to have helped some.  Now people go to the side door since there is no sign there....

Uh, same dogs, different door....   Actually my dogs don't bite, but people don't need to know that.

LOML found a door mat that literally says "Go Away".  It doesn't always work, but sometimes it does.  If nothing else it's a conversation starter that can be followed up with "we really meant it - go away!"

My issue is that I work from home.  So when they are banging on my door, I'm likely in a meeting and can't stop to answer the door.

My other idea was to spread piles of empty shell casings all down my driveway and on the front porch.     Do you think they would get the idea if they have to climb over piles of empty shell casings of various calibers to reach my doorbell.   Maybe put a few of those cheesy stick on bullet holes beside the door bell button....       I'm not buying..   NOTHING!

When I was in the ministry, and was that bothersome person that would come knocking on your door the one I liked the best was a scroll sign that said every third person would be shot on sight, do you feel lucky?
