Has anyone used Hickory for any of their projects?
My neighbor was cutting firewood and he told me had some oak and hickory wood to burn. I noticed he had a few pieces in the pill that were fairly square. I asked if I could have a few pieces. He gladly gave them to me. We trade things back and forth. I was able to saw the two logs down.  I used my table saw to do this with a 40 tooth Diablo blade. I was able to get 3  5/8 x 3 x 10 inch piece out of one piece. The other log I got 4 5/8 x 6 x 18 plus 1 just over a ? thick. I did not run them through the planer yet. I think they need to dry a little longer. The tree has been down for a few years.  But I will wait awhile.
The grain and color is great.

We (my partner Keith and I) have used hickory and we love it.  It is hard like maple but cuts beautifully.  Keith wrote an article on North American Hardwoods that we have on our Free Stuff page of our site. You may want to check it out. It talks about lots of the characteristics of different wood and help you make a better decision what to use when scrolling. The link to it is here:

I hope you enjoy it. :)  Sheila

I haven't used it for scroll work yet, but when woodturning, it cuts beautifully and finishes wirh a fantastic shine.

I used Hickory when I built the Thomas clock. All the gears where done with a scroll saw. The wood is hard but cuts and finishes very well. Attached is a pic of the clock.
