Need Some Suggestions about a saw for my son...
« on: November 15, 2012, 01:02:11 pm »
Hello,

Need to pick your brains if you don't mind.  My son (who is 11) got the chance to use my fathers scrollsaw when we were visiting him in Arizona.  He really enjoyed working with it and doing some projects with my dad.

My question is, my son has asked for a scrollsaw for Christmas.  Is there a particular type/make/model you would suggest?  Would like to keep it under $200

Thanks

Henry

Hey Henry, Welcome to the forum! I'm Dan from Southern California. In that price range, the Porter Cable saw sold at Lowe's seems to be a decent entry level saw.  It sells for around $190 and comes with the stand. The next level will be around $500 or so.
If you have more question concerning scrolling, come back here and ask. There are folks from all over the world willing to share their knowledge!

Hi Henry, Dan hit the nail on the head.  The Porter Cable got the highest ratings for it's price class.  I know a couple of people with that saw and they like it.

Yup, looks like you received some good advice in the other part of the board, so welcome also from South Dakota.

I have had the Porter Cable saw with stand purchased from Lowe's for a few weeks and so far I am happy with it. Is it a Dewalt or Excaliber? No, but then again I have never had the pleasure of trying one of those, so I cannot say I miss what I never had. As my skills get better I might one day purchase a saw with more options, but as a newbie I am happy with my purchase so far. Just waiting for my Flying Dutchman blades to come in so I can see how well they cut. I think they will make a big difference.

Todd  Whe you get those blades, you will think you have a new saw!  They are that good!
