Summer Blues.... :+)
« on: August 17, 2012, 08:26:54 pm »
Well Winter is far behind and Summer is here and its not to much longer before good ole Fall sets in.  Yea!  Vacations are over and just awaiting for Winter again.  Burrrrrrr!
Just wanted to start a odds n ends about the Summer whether.  For me I mostly loose interest in Scrolling and Finishing.  Then come the COOLER whether and Bingo....All changes.  Just wondering if there is any feelings about this subject.  I did notice that the amount of POSTS in the past month or so is less.  Anyway....  Danny  :+)

Yea, it was extreeeeeemly hot here in wisconsin this summer. Starting to get cooler temps in the 70's day and 40's nite. Glad to have the air off.
I am in the middle of redoing my shop. I added several sanders and now I have to find a place for them. I got smart and made sitdown stands for spindle sander and a low workbench to hold belt sander and dremel and accessories. I plan on sitting on my butt this fall, winter for at least half of my workshop time anyway. Had to put some tools on casters to move around in shop... it's ok, got a chance to clean a little and found some stuff I forgot I had. My plan is to give intarsa a try.... can't wait till I'm settled in.

My Packers are off to a rough and tough start with 2 preseason losses. Alot of football to look forward too.

You're right Danny!  Don't spend nearly as much time in the shop during the warmer months.  Just too busy with all the things that can't/don't get done during the cold months;  mowing, gardening, expanding the chicken run, fixing things on the house, cleaning the outside of the house, family gatherings, etc. etc.!  Plus working 6 days a week!  Plus all the inside things that gotta get done like laundry, dishes, cooking supper (yes, I cook 3-4 times a week) Just isn't enough time in the day for all of it, however I usually can squeeze in a little shop time here and there.  Most days, my forum visits come in the morning before work, but sometimes I'm on in the evenings, especially if the wife is hanging out on Facebook with her friends.

Just too much outside work going on here in the summer. I try to put in two to three hrs. a day in my woodshop; and would cut more if not for heat and chores ouside. But, this winter I will be making a lot more dust! I need to be learning pattern making using Gimp and Inkscape which I have downloaded for several weeks now, but,  my attention span has shortened with old age! After reading the local paper,yahoo sports, and this forum, I am ready to turn the computer off and take a nap!

With the extreme heat and other activities I have not been at any of my woodworking tools since mid-May!
95 - 100? degrees in the garage just is not conducive to an ol' fart like me sitting there for several hours.  I did pick up that used Hawk and have been working it over a little bit and did cut a couple toy cars this week so I know it runs and cuts OK...now to rig a 'blade blower' aquarium pump and move it to my S.O.'s basement to use while visiting there.

Today the high temp is to be 75? so I will be out in the garage routing edges on some shelves for our newly redecorated office. Once they are back up on the wall I will be 'off and running' with so many stockpiled scroll projects it will keep me busy through APRIL 2013!!!

~~~GB~~~
I never really wanted to grow up....All I wanted was to be able to reach the cookie jar...and play with my DW 788
I generally scroll and woodturn quite a bit during the summer months because my fall months are more devoted to chainsaw carving and milling. Its not much fun feeling the heat and fumes off a stihl 460 in the summer months! :D however I still don't get nearly as much done with my scrolling as I want to. Gotta cut grass and keep up with flowers and all kinds of stuff. Oh well, I guess that's life..
You said it Dan LOL! The great news is, Danielle is taking an interest in scroll work. She cut her first project. It was a simple little cute pig ornament. She really enjoyed herself and now has it hanging on her rear view in her car. It was a great experience!
I'm out in the shop everyday. The heat kicks up around noon time and I usually call it around 2:00. Then I come in and turn on the A/C and do the house work, yeah I cook too!
Thats great Scott! When I first started scrolling, my wife was Tole Painting, so most of what I cut was for her to paint, so it was a team effort. She doesn't paint anymore, she's a quilter now, but she's my No. one critic!
luckily my workshop is in the basement, 60-65 all year around!
but all the nice weather and vacation makes scrolling less interesting during summer.
And I Thank Everyone for their input.  Sometimes I just get so involved with Everything eles and when I do think about Scrolling I realize its been a week and I haven't got a project planned.  Our whether here in Alabama is slowly turning instead from the mid 90's always to the mid 80's and I find myself thinking more n more about being in my shop more.  Changing of the Yearly Times.  Tks....  Danny  :+)
I know what you mean Danny.  I usually take a little time off from the shop during the really hot days of summer.  Then when the shadows start getting a little longer my desire to get scrolling comes roaring back.  This could also have something to do with receiving the new ornament patterns in the mail. :)
The end of August makes me realize the year is moving by and I'd better get busy.
Luckily my shop is also in the basement so the ALabama heat hasn't kept me out of there.  But work has!  I am finally glad the schools are back in session here and my job hours will be cut! (I'm an assistant manager at the local movie theater!)  Now with things slowing down, I plan on making some things for a show in December and some gifts and playing more with the bandsaw I got last month!
