Krylon Clear Acrylic Gloss Coat use

I use the clear coat for my finishing touch on my wood pieces after soaking them in Danish oil. I wipe 'em down and let them dry for a few days and then use the Krylon....why do I find small white strands around the edges of some of my pieces after spraying. Beforehand I tack cloth them all carefully ..blow 'em off to get rid of the dust etc.....SO, what's happening here and how can I prevent this nuisance!

Can't help you with that, I also use Danish Oil,and after it drys for a few days, I spray with shellac, and don't have any problems.   Edward

I would say you are having a reaction with the Krylon (acrylic) and the Oily residue from the Danish Oil. I don't care how much you wipe or let it dry some will remain in the wood. Krylon is a good product and and costs less but it is an acrylic. After I stain or use an oil base product, I wipe, let dry. My first coat is Spray Lacquer. You can use Spray Shellac too. It seals in any Oily residue. Then I spray several coats of Kylon. Great results, And I have had no problems.

That's a really good point, Russ.  I have been watching this board to see what others would say because I have customers ask me all the time about applying a different type of finish over another type of stain, etc.  I have a walnut fruit basket that I use mineral oil on and I only need to re-oil it about once a year, sometimes less and it has a nice luster to it. The oil doesn't really dry out and is absorbed into the wood like a sponge would absorb water, so you are never going to have something that is completely 'dry'.  By applying the lacquer as a sealer, the lacquer itself would dry, allowing you to apply the Krylon or other finish over it.  It makes a lot of sense!  I will certainly give it a try the next time that I am using an oil finish that I want to permanently seal.  Thanks so much! I love these boards because I really do learn a lot from everyone.

Not sure what finish you are looking for but if you are useing oil and want a sheen use tung oil and if you want a darker color and a mat finish to you wood use boiled linseed oil.
when I use any oil I dilute it with turps 50% this is the carrier it drags the oil into the wood and dries a lot quicker, first coat drown the wood and dry over night, then apply as may coats as the wood will absorb or untill you get the desired finish, you can also buff the tung finish for a better sheen, try it it works.
You can also put bees wax over oil and buff but I find it is inclined to leave finger marks

Bought a couple of cans of Krylon Clear Satin.  I have been wanting to try them since Steve gave them a thumbs up.  Thanks for the tip on using lacquer to seal.  I bought the Krylon for about half of what the spray lacquer costs.  I do like lacquer, it dries so fast and I have a short attention span.  It keeps me engaged to finish a project.

You're going to *love* the Krylon then.     A light coat will dry in about 10 minutes.

As Becky pointed out, Krylon dries very fast too. I just found using the lacquer to seal as a first coat work the best for me.
