Need your thoughts on something please.
« on: May 27, 2010, 02:19:40 am »
I was wondering if it is ok to copy a picture of a finished product and put in my example book so people can see what is possible. Then when somebody wants it made to order the pattern from the vendor and then make it. Or is this also an infringement of copyright? I am not planning to make the pattern without buying it. It's just there are so many lovely things out there to make I want to share it, but can not possible buy all the patterns and keep them incase somebody would want it.
Your thoughts please.

I've wanted to do that too, but probably best to ask the source holder of the pic(s) you want to use with that same explanation....
Maybe even give credit to the source and designer.

As a designer, personally I see nothing wrong with that.  It would be nice if you gave credit to the designer, as Charlie said, but as far as I am concerned it would be fine. :)

I'm not a lawyer, but here are my thoughts:

If you obtained the photo from a source such a Sheila's website, then the photo is the property of the source...You may, or may not, need permission to use it, but I think you'd be safe by including wording at the bottom of the picture that states, "Photo courtesy of Sheila Landry Designs website; www.sheilalandrydesigns.com".

On the other hand, if you made one of Sheila's designs and took a photo of it, then you own the photo of the work that you did...In this case, I don't think you'd need any disclaimer in your "catalog".

I think that the real area of concern is when it comes to the pattern itself...Some source's, such as Steve's, allow you to use his patterns for any purpose (personal, or for profit), but you are not allowed to sell the pattern, nor redistribute it...Other sources have other rules, and I think that's where all of the copyright types of questions come into play.

I too would ask the designer.  I have Shelia's website and picture on our web site but only with her permission.  Only fair.
