Air blower on DW788
« on: January 27, 2012, 10:48:39 pm »
Well here goes for my 1st question. The segmented blower is very stiff & hard to move around, is there something that can be applied to loosen it up w/out damaging the plastic?

Thank's

Actually, I have not heard of this problem. But I don't think it is a problem at all! Just move it around a little, It should loosen up. You might try some graphite lubricant. You should be able to find it at a hobby shop. Don't use any oil or WD40 on the plastic hose and for sure do not use silicone!

It becomes loose itself, better it's a bit stiff so it does not change position.

Thank's for the reply!
I purchased the saw used and the blower tube was not attached, so I snaped it on during the test run and noticed it slowly drifted downward while the saw was running. Thinking it's not a big deal I made the purchase and took the saw home. When looking closely at the hose segment that snaps onto the metal blower housing noticed there was a fine crack in the plastic, so I super glued, clamped and set it aside for a few hrs to cure. Then checked the round metal end of the blower housing and felt some burs which I lightly sanded by hand w/120 thinking that was what probably caused the plastic to crack.

Before attempting to attach the tube I noticed some flashing from the molding process that ws not removed and I made sure the inside of the plastic end was clean & smooth. Well, I carefully started attaching the tube and just when I thought everything was going good CRACK, oh well. I'll try gluing it again and next time use a heat gun to slightly soften the plastic end, just enough to get it attached w/out cracking (I hope).

All this to say that I believe during the production molding process of this batch of part's, the diamater and flashing was not to spec. So I was looking for something that I could use to loosen up the segment's a bit. I'll pick-up some graphite as suggested and give it a try.

If you have a split in a segment the segment is worthless. The rest is fine but the segment won't hold up if you do much cutting. I have heard of many trying to glue these, but in the end it is best to replace the broken segment. Hang on to the rest of the blower segments so you can extend an existing one or add one on another machine using a small air pump or compressor.

Thank you all for the input!

I've decided to replace the blower tube in a couple week's.

My blower came off because it cracked.  Took off the cracked segment but couldn't get it back on.  One of the "great guys" on this forum said to put it into very hot, almost boiling water for a few seconds - I did (had to try a couple times) but it worked like a charm.  Thanks again to you "great guys" who are able to help with any problem.
