I use old dryer and AC motors I get for free. They work great, do the same job.

That's like the one I have on my Table saw.  Does a fair job.  The way it throws ssaw dust it is hard to catch it all.

I have one similar to that one in my workshop, the cloth bag on the top section tends to let the very fine dust through, to cure this slip a clear plastic bag over the top any dust that escapes through the cloth bag is trapped by the plastic one and drops straight down instead of being dispersed into the room

At the risk of sounding totally ignorant on this topic...do you need something like that for occasional hobby work, or only if you scroll a lot?

It all depends on your 'sawdust output' and your tolerance for being able to write notes to yourself on every surface in the shop.

I work in my garage and when it gets too dusty I just open the door, grab the leaf blower, turn on my 30" fan and let'er BLOW out the door. Prefer to do this right before a rain so I don't have to sweep the driveway!

Brenda you don't want to breath in all that dust either, some woods are toxic. When I'm cutting out in the carport I set a fan blowing the dust away from me. I wear contact lenses and if I don't use the fan soon I can't see for the tears. Scroll saw dust is very fine and drifts around like pollen.
Keep asking questions these folks will answer them. Probably more than you want. LOL

damn chuck, you just scared the crap out of me!!
i knew i had some dust floating around the shop but i am blowing my glasses off from time
to time. i have a nice jet air filter but i need to find someone close by to help me mount it.
one of the health problems i have is a loss of feeling in my feet so i can very easily injure
myself when trying to climb and stand on a ladder as i cant feel the rungs under me and know
where im standing plus the sever arthritis in my hips and knees also impair my ability to climb
a ladder.
but i really need to get it put up so i am going to have to hire someone to do it for me cause
i have yet to start doing any serious sanding/finishing so its only going to get worse.

that small collector from HF, can i use a 20% off coupon on top of that sale price??

Hey northerner, At the very least, set the air cleaner near your saw. Maybe you can build a stand or set it on your work bench close to the saw. You want to eliminate that airborne dust as much as possible!

This could be a nice unit. The thing to remember is to keep it lasting a while. A chip collecter set in line before will help in this process. this way all of the larger particles will have a place to go before they contact the blower assembly. This also gives you the opportunity to add a secondary filter to keep smaller dust particles from reaching the blower. In this case, by the specs on the machine, the bearings are not sealed and will wear out faster with fine dust. The secondary filter will need changed often if you cut alot, but filters are cheaper than blower units.
