Puzzle pieces problem
« on: December 07, 2011, 06:01:28 pm »
Hi!

I'm sorry, it's like I ask a question each day! One day I'll be better and I'll work by myself!

It's a little question... When I make puzzle pieces, the pieces can go out from the bottom, but not from the top... I know that sanding will solve the problem, but how to solve it while cutting. I don't know if my question is clear. if not, I'll try  to explain more in details...

Your BLADE is NOT SQUARE with the table of your saw therefore you are cutting on an angle.

Use the edge of a credit card and true up your blade with the table and the problem should be solved.

I agree if your blade and table are not 90? you will have problems cutting puzzles. That is the first thing to check. Second is blade tension, it needs to be nice and tite.  ;)

It can also be caused by pushing the wood too much bending the blade. Try a fresh blade, slowing down, and letting the saw do the work.

The blade was square with the table.

Maybe I should put a bit more tension on the blade.

I remember pushing a bit hard, because we were cutting 1 3/4 inch pine and it was really, really slow!!!!

Have good tension, good speed and do not push to hard into the blade. Let the blade do the cutting. If not enough speed you might have a tendency to push too hard into the blade.
It looks that you are bending the blade and that is why it cuts with a bevel.
One more thing. Most blades have a burr on the right side and want to cut to the right. Move the wood some degree to the right.
Go to my side and click on the tutorial from Carter Johnson and also look at his video.

Please check the table anyway. I thought mine was square too - had cut 6 puzzles until I realized that it had NOT been square  ::)
Luckily I was able to fix it and the puzzle animals are now standing straight.

Also do not cut with a too small blade. A tight fit is fine, but a bit loose fit helps more. Kids like the puzzles to fit loose.

In addition to what everyone else has said, don't worry about asking too many questions.  We are all here to share and we have all gone through the same phases.  Better to ask than to stumble around making "designer firewood" while you learn.
