Need Wood sources..
« on: November 23, 2011, 11:35:18 am »
Hi all..In my small town finding wood is a challenge. Lowes and Home Depot are the only stores that sell it. Pine,Redwood,Poplar,Redwood is about it. Can someone point me to a good source of hardwoods? 3/16 to 1/2 inch? I'd like to do some portrait patterns in something other than cheap 1/4 inch baltic birch. I've never done projects in exotic woods and would love to try some really nice woods. Any suggestions?..Thanks..Jon..Happy holidays to everyone!

My favorite.  They're slow, but great wood, so you sort of have to plan ahead.

Good luck,

also keep an eye on ebay and other selling lists. Sometimes there is a good offer.

I use ocoochhardwoods pretty often. They have super competitive prices. I use eBay a lot also. One thing I have found with exotics, based on my experience the money you put into it is often very hard to get back if you are selling it.. if you are cutting for yourself go for it.

Go to: wooddealsonline.com. They will search e-bay for you and make it easy to see what is available. I have received some excellent deals on e-bay.
Good Luck

I also use Heritage.  Great folks.  Sameo, sameo with the slow service so, as Bill says, plan ahead.

My last 2 orders of 1/8 Blatic Birch had some minor voids and the inner ply wasn't the same color as the outter plys.  Much darker.

Told Ray, their manager, today.

These are great folks and will custom cut stuff for you.  I needed some oak, drop dead straight for my schwibbogen bases and they did it for me.
