Better solution:

Apply pattern on wood. Cut circle. The glue a second board to the first one and cut the outline of the double size wood. The depth of the circle will be adjusted by the wood you use for the first bit.

That's what I'm planning for some clocks insets, simpler then working with forstner drills or anything else.

You are right Gabby!  Especially because people tend to run them way too fast and they overheat.

Another option if you have a drill press is a "fly cutter" bit.  They are usually adjustable as far as the diameter of the circle, and cut with either 1 or 2 spurs which rotate around the center hole bit.

Hey Bill I have to add, they aren't for novices to power tools! Those spinning arms with the cutters can be quite dangerous to someone not knowing what they are doing.

Which is why I didn't bring it up earlier!

make sure that the wood you are using is clamped really well. hole saws are big and have lots of teeth in the wood, they can be agressive if you are not careful.

This is the reason you never have enough clamps.  Just for the reason you all are talking about.

I saw one of those hole saw kits on ebay for around $18...has different sizes.  It's not a bit I see myself using too often but I have a few projects and the this bit will save me a huge amount of time and effort.  I'll show you the project when I'm done.
Thanks for everyone's help!!

Hey Anne, Just so you know, A hole saw is designed for making rough holes for construction and such, so be sure to try it on a piece of scrap wood of the same type of wood you will be using just to be sure it will do what you want.

Dgman...thanks for telling me that.  I would have been very upset to screw up my project as the hole saw bit will be one of the last things I'll be cutting.  I actually would have just went cut without even trying the bit out first.  Haste makes waste....ain't the truth!?!?!?!

Good for making simple wheels of various sizes. Want to make it a little fancier, make a shallow cut with a smaller hole say to suggest the inner circumfrence of the tire then finish cutting with the larger saw to make the tire and axel hole. Voila!
