Interesting wood - found in the home store!
« on: September 03, 2011, 05:40:26 am »
Hey!

Yesterday I went to the local home store "OBI" to get some poplar ply. I went to the wood section and had to discover that another wood is on sale.

The planks are acacia - already finished with some darkening stain that makes it look like walnut. I know what you think - this time I felt fancy and bought some to try.

Well, it turned out really nice! simple to cut (3/4" can easily be cut with a #1) and the stain turned out to be a thin coating that comes off while general sanding the piece.

I'll post some pics later!

Anxiously awaiting pics, Torsten.  Always looking for something new (and inexpensive) to try!

Have you tried staining it yet yourself?  How does it take?
Mike

Junk is something you've kept for years and throw away three weeks before you need it.

I have applied oil - looks really good so far. cutting left a little fuzz in some corners, nothing to worry about.
You'll get pics tomorrow - a BBQ crossed my way making it impossible to refer back to the wood shop ;D

Yeah - that's what I did too ;D

Here are the promised pics of the acacia wood. You can see the grain, that came out with some oil.
I even did the fragile cutting of "Soehne SIegmars" I had promised a friend - the wood looked just right.
It's the name and logo (still to cut) of a LARP (live action role play) Group, which in the US often refers to the Wild West and in Europe is gathered on the Middle Ages.

@ Hank
Yes, please check it out, definitly worth a try. Don't fear the dark walnut like coating - it comes of with the least bit of sanding.

I'll check around the OBI tomorrow in my lunch break to get more from this wood. It's soft, no problem to cut the 18mm board(3/4") with a #3.

OBI is a German home store which you can find nearly everywhere. The wood there is quite OK. Most home stores here in Germany have a wood worker there who cuts the planks to your desired size. Also can you often get the rest pieces from cutting - useless for others, useful for us :)

Looks good Torsten, we have a few varieties of Acacia here in Australia, Wattle and Blackwood are the common one's here. I have used Blackwood in a few of my projects which has a nice colour and grain to it.
