S.A.G.E. scroll saw ? ? ?

Just saw one on craigslist!
Anyone ever heard of this model or used one?

Looks impressive, but I'm wondering how it performs as compared to other commercial models of somewhat similar price (Excalibur, etc).

Noticed that they claim the front to back blade motion is only 0.007...Rick Hutcheson's website has a chart that compares the front to back motion on several models...According to that chart, the only model that come close to that tight of a tolerance is Hegner with 0.006...Of course, the Eclipse is at 0.000...The next closest is the Delta Q3 with 0.024, followed by Excalibur at 0.026, and the Dewalt at 0.030...The chart does not provide any data concerning the less expensive "entry level" saws.

I currently have a Dremel 1680...There are a lot of colorful phases that I could use to describe how bad that saw performs...I am in the reasearch stage of making an upgrade at some point in the near future, so I'm soaking up data like a sponge...I hear the praises for the Dewalt, and think it's probably a good choice for many...But, I want to go at least one step beyond...From my research, I've determined that the Excalibur EX-21 (very similar to the Dewalt, becasue they were both designed by the same company) would be considered my minimum level of upgrade...I'm not a production cutter, so some of the much higher dollar saw are beyond the limits of practicality...But, this S.A.G.E saw fall into roughly the same price bracket as the Excalibur, so it's a possible candidate.

If anyone has any opinion/recommendation/experience with this particular saw, please let us all know.

The one I saw on 'craigslist' St. Louis is going for $400....

This is a SAGE scroll saw. made by Vintage Scroll Saw in Branson, Missouri. The saw, except for the variable speed motor, etc, is made of solid oak. The arms, arm brackets, inside frame,pitman, and cabinet back are laminated for strength. The arms pivot in the brackets held by steel pins through bronze bushings that need no lubrication.

The 1/8HP motor will operate from 40 to 1500 strokes per minute. It is in great shape.

This saw currently sells new for $795.

Well after looking at their site and peeking at the patterns they offer.

If the patterns are any indication of the quality of their craftsmanship I'd not spend a nickel on that saw.  Pretty pathetic patterns we could find at any kindergarten class.

Here's one of these S.A.G.E. units that I saw on craigslist out of Dallas (advertised for only $150; makes you wonder why the retail price and this price are so different):

I too noticed that the patterns that they offer were pretty cheesy...Even the worst saw on the marker, equipped with the worst blade could cut those...However, the sample item shown on the craigslist link is more intricate.

Does anyone know if there is a website for the SAGE Scroll Saw that was originally made in Branson, MO?  They sold the pattern to someone else and we are looking for the new manufacturer.  Thanks.

A friend of mine had one and found out that it wouldn't last if you did a lot of scrolling.
