Dark BLO
« on: June 25, 2011, 08:52:05 am »
Hi there,

in reaction on a topic to darken BLO I bought some brown oil paint.
thinned it with mineral spirits and BLO
+/-  5% paint, 20% spirits and 75 BLO

applied it to a piece of Baltic birch and this is the result.

A is original wood
B wood with BLO
C wood with dark BLO

don't know how long it stays this way but it is darker and looks good.
the grain contrast is high.

Now that is an enterprising solution, Marcel.  What I was trying to do was to darken the BLO when used on Poplar without having a really blotchy result.  I've since tried using a sealer first and then staining.  It works that way except the stain is lighter than it would normally be probably because the sealer doesn't allow it to penetrate much.  Maybe your idea would work on poplar after sealing it.  I just need to keep on experimenting.

"Dunking" or allowing it to penetrate a while may darken the wood even more.

Expirmenting will have to be done on a piece by piece basis.

You can vary the colour of oils with spirit based wood stains.

Hey Mick....Can you explain a lil more about SPIRIT BASED WOOD STAINS?
                I have wondered about mixing the Danish Oil with say a Minwax oil stain.  Thanks for you help with this....  Danny  :+}

P.S.  I know .... Why don't I experiment.  LOL  Easier to read it from another scroller that has positive or negitive results after experimenting.  LOL

Hey Mick....Can you explain a lil more about SPIRIT BASED WOOD STAINS?

Here in the UK the main stains are waterbased or Acrylic and spirit based.Spirit based can be mixed with oils used to finish wood.It can also be thinned with white spirit, not sure what you
call it in the states, but it is used to thin oil based paints and oil wood finishes.
I used to put some BLO or other finishing oil in a clean glass jar and add the stain a little at a time then test on a piece of scrap.
Bit hit and miss I'm afraid.
