needing big help
« on: May 12, 2011, 10:31:31 am »
I am wanting to cut out a 8X10 wall hanging that has a 57 chevy and a  68  GTO   kind of angled toward eachother and underneath it all have Happy Fathers Day 2011. I would like for it to be big enough to see and not to detailed on the cars since i am somewhat of a newbie on fretwork.... I know you guys have created some amazing things I was wondering if someone could step up to the plate and hit a homerun for me....Thanks in Advance You all are amazing

I'm sure One of the many great Pattern Makers we have here will be able to help you with this Good luck to you I hope I can get a copy of that when they do it.

Hi, I gave your request a go but having 2 cars angled together on a 8x10 frame would make them a bit small,
hope this works for you.....Paul

All you need to do is Type up what font letters you want to use then erase a conntecting line a bit so the wood will stay in place.

Chachi's method works, but if you want something easier, do a search for "stencil" fonts.  I know there are several at dafonts.com, and I'm sure there are others on other sites.  Hope this helps!   :)

Finished and sanded smooth. I think looks good for a first time. What do you guys think.....   Also I have tried on pieces of scrap to seal this wood and all clearcoat sealers make the wood more yellowish and i do not like it. Would it hurt to leave it unfinished. This will be hanging on a wall in an office.

Turned out very nice beginner or not.  The danger you face by not finishing it is hand prints and body oil, foreign stuff from the air will/may over time permeate the wood and may discolor it also.  Try using some watco danish oil (natural) and then after it dries (24 hours) clear coat with a spray lacquer.  The watco may darken it a slightly but not turn it yellow and the clear coat will seal the wood.

Junk is something you've kept for years and throw away three weeks before you need it.

I have heard about using some lemon oil, does anyone know what that would do to the pine in the plywood.

If you leave the piece unfinished, body oil, dirt and debris will stain it over time.  Any oil will enhance the grain and darken the piece just a bit.  If you just oil or wax it, you will have to redo it periodically.  I recommend you oil it and seal it with some form of poly.
