Modifying Oil Products????
« on: May 10, 2011, 12:06:44 pm »
I have always used oil Stain for my projects until recently when I learned about lemon oil, boiled limeseed oil and other oils.  The oils really do a better job of covering the end grain which was my hang up with stains.  Lately I have been using the oils, but like the lemon and limeseed oils just don't have much color.  My question is....Is there any product that can be mixed with the oils to change the color to different shades?
                  I thank yas for any info.  Later....  Danny  :+}

Now this product really sounds very, very interesting for all of us that like myself have basically finished most everything to look one shade or the other Brown.  I can imagine all sorts of nicer looking projects.  Anyway I am going to order a few colors and give it a try.  Later....  Danny  :+}

Cool! Let us know how it works out. I would try it out on some scrap wood  before applying on a project. Just to be safe.

One product I did buy and try bout a year or so ago is a powder dye that is mixed with plain ole water.  Thot I had a good thing at first, but just did not make the wood look good.  In fact spray varnish just did not change the dyed wood very much.  My big failure.  Anyway I am always open to new things.
     I am hoping other members chime in on this topic.  Pros and Cons. Danny :+}

Up here in Canada we can get this stuff.... http://www.saman.ca/products/2-saman-water-based-stain ... but I am not sure if it is available in the USA yet.

It's water based and the stains can be blended together to get whatever shade(s) you desire. I have not tried it myself (yet) but I am trying to get some funds together to give it a go as I can envisage a lot of intarsia/segmentation projects I could use it on (once I get my scrolling skills up to the required level).

I don't see why you couldn't stain the wood and then, once dry, apply lemon oil to bring out the natural grain and finish with a top coat of choice.

Danny, I would like to see what you try and how it works out. You can mix those with a tint-able base (to make a stain) or with one of the oils (to make a colored tint) to enhance the grain. Keep us updated on what you try.

Danny, Danish oil does come in traditional wood colors like walnut, pecan, mahogony, etc.  I generally use clear but do occasionally use the colored ones.

Hey Julie....I have all the different colors of Danish Oils and they are all in the brown catagory.  I just think being able to stain/oil a project with some other color would make it Pop so to speak.  Anyway its in the Deciding and ordering stage at present, but it does excite me a lil.  Will let yas know.

I have used food coloring to add some color to some projects. I used a shellac over the top. I would think you could oil over the top. It is fun to have some color mixed in with all of the shades of brown.
