Hello everyone!
I'm new. I'm an 61 year old male, waiting for 62 so I have an income (SS). I love woodworking, and bought a scroll saw to help me with that. I have had a 16? Delta for a few years now. I live in Michigan, and do not have a heated shop, so I have been waiting for warm weather to really get anything going.
I started using a scroll saw 50 years ago. I used to take pictures of people and glue them on a piece of plywood, then cut out the profile with the scroll saw. I would take these profiles and maybe some props from the same pic. And glue the 'standing up? to a base and make a lamp out of them.
I lost contact with the scroll saw for about 45 years until I was making a chest on chest and wanted to make some fine detail additions. Frankly, the saw has seen little use. About 2 years ago, I move the saw into a spare room at my home and started making things with it. My son is into dragons, so I made a number of dragon wall placks as gifts to him, and even made some cut out lamps as gifts
Soon I hope to get into a lot more just for the enjoyment. I plan to buy a better saw soon (as I get some money) and was delighted when I saw Steve had picked up an Excalibur. This is the saw I thought I wanted, and I sign on 4-5 times a day to see if he has done his test yet.
I have some problems with the Delta which I hope will be addressed when I get a new saw. One the the worst for me is that the blade does not move straight up and down. I guess this make the saw cut faster, but for my eyes it makes it VERY hard to see where the blade is. I HATE the clips on the Delta. Trying to make interior cuts soon becomes a real chore because it takes me 10 min to get the blade in the new hole and hooked back up. A lot of my problem comes from the fact that I use tiny blades. I think the biggest blade I own is a #2 and most of my blades are 00s.
Is there any where in the forum that you have ?road tests?? I was wondering mostly because I want to try other blades and would love to get something to base my order on. I was recently cutting some small letters out of thin plastic, so I got some crown tooth blades. These work great on plastic by the way. I wanted to cut something for a bird house, and as I already had a blade in the saw, I used it on cutting some wood. For me, it was great! The crown tooth blade cut a little slower then the skip tooth I had been using for wood, (good for me who has a big problem seeing his blade) and the finish was great! I'd love to see a ?road test? of a number of different blades side by side.
Hope to ?talk? to a lot of you in the upcoming moths!
