My Dad is a pilot, and his fav is also the P-51. Might have found my first potrait idea.

My favorite is th Corsair, probably because of Papi Boyington and the Baa Baa Blacksheep. Grew up loving that show.

Wow GB!  Don't see a lot of people familiar with the A model P-51.  Most are accustomed to seeing the D model.

MaineWoods...I received a 'coffee table book' several years ago of most of the "Warbirds" of WWII and I often just sit and wander through it and read about all that went on in the thought process to come up with the planes they felt would do the job and how they 'adapted' them as they went along.
Part of the reason I am so interested in my grandson being chosen to fly the Growler version of the FA-18.

GB, I hear ya!  I've got a copy of Jane's "All the World's Aircraft" on my bookshelf.  Refer to it frequently as I have been a "wing nut" my whole life!  I just commented because most people wouldn't even recognise a P-51A as being a P-51.  They're used to seeing the P-51Ds on the History channel or such, so when you say P-51, that's what they see in their minds.

As for your grandson, I'm sure you couldn't be more proud!  Earning his Navy wings is an accomplishment shared by only a select few.  May he have a long (and safe!) career as an aviator, and please let him know his sacrifices ARE appreciated by those of us sleeping comfortably in our own beds each night!

P.S. I'm still trying to find a copy of Cosmo Kramer's Coffee Table Book!

If you haven't done it yet do a search on The Black Sheep Squadron. I read an article by one of the members. The TV show didn't do it justice at all. They weren't all a bunch of screw-ups as they made out in the show. Good reading, wish I had saved it.
I've been a wannabe pilot for years, got really interested in ultralights, but the $$ and health ran out. I did get some stick time in an Aeronca Champ back when instructor, plane and fuel were $14.00 an hour total! Got transferred to Cuba before I could solo.

I visited the Naval Air Museum at Pensacola several years ago and got to see the actual plane 'Pappy' flew and read the true statements posted.
I too was a wannabe pilot and did my early flights in an old 'Cub' ...course it was newer then! Almost got to solo but health problem resulted in failure of physical. I have two cousins that have planes so I still get to take the controls on rare occasions.

I'm going to do a cutting of the Spitfire for my dad.  He was a mechanic on the Spits during the second world war.  I know he'll love it  (he's 91 years old now and still doing great)
