Great idea Tux. I have made a few shadow lamps for people it works on the same principle I think. It casts a pattern on the ceiling and other walls once lit. I cannot find the name or pic of the light to use as I forgot the name
But the light bulb is coated or something with silver on the top this helps against the heat close to the wood and it is not as bright as a normal light which gives it a suttle touch. If I remember the name I wil let you know.

I thought it was kind of cheesy myself but the idea is there Hook up the light in back cut out the wood to whatever shape he neededand follow it from there I may try that idea myself when I get a new saw Just not with the Alien I figure mine and the wifes names in a heart or something.

they didn't use a lens,
I think that the length of the tube already "align" the light beam in one direction.
what would happen if the tube was shorter, would it make the image more blurry?

hey!
Thanks, Chachi, that's for sure a good idea.
Sadly I haven't come with a first try yet, had to struggle a bit with a flu the last days.
@ Marcel
hmm, I think it will increase the ratio of size/distance.

OK, had some time to try some:
It works!
The light needs to be directed. The beam should be as narrow as possible. In this test I used my scroll saw light (LED, narrow beam). The pattern also needs to be small - the smaller the pattern, the nearer it can be placed to the light source.
