WOOD! Newly cut Walnut!

I have access to some 10 to 12" walnut logs that are being removed fro a subdivision....
These are 10 to 12" in diameter and 18 to 24" long.
What do I need to do to age them before using.
I plan to saw them into planks with a bandsaw and eventually use them for scroll projects.

I'm far from an expert here but I think without a kiln the logs will need to dry for about a year. You will need to control the rate that they dry to prevent checking. You will also probably need a moisture meter. You might ask over a lumberjacks.com. There are several guys over there that have experience in that area.

I've never done it but I've read it takes a year per inch in diameter but I don't know if this varies by the length of the log (talk about needing patience!).  And you need to put a sealer on the ends so it doesn't check.
