How to get 3D objects hanging straight?
« on: January 04, 2011, 04:51:12 pm »
Hey!

As I carry on the Butterfly theme, I tried to do some 3D objects. Sadly the quit tiny butterfly does not hang straight - but I got a well balanced dove:

It has a higher weight on the body (1/2" birch & wings 1/8" ply wood), that's the main point I figured out to get it balanced.

As you can see I have made 2 attachment points to raise the balance point and to get it hanging correctly. Do you know tricks that to do better?

regards,
Torsten

You need to find the center of gravity.  The balance point if you will.

Junk is something you've kept for years and throw away three weeks before you need it.

Hold it lightly between your thumb and index finger.  Not so lightly that you drop it, but lightly enough that the weight of the piece can move it in your fingers.  Adjust your grip along the edge until it hangs the way you want.  Make your attachment point there.
