That the first De Walt scroll saw was made in 1996 and was made by Sommerville Design, and this is the company that also manufactured the Excalibur scroll saw

Increases the strain on the motor?  Does this mean I could be trading down?

Yep I knew that. Sorry in my earlier post, it should have said the original Excalibur by Sommerville Design EX-19vs, EX-30vs are belt driven, witch helped to increase the power but added strain on the motor.  ;)

Hey Jimbo, Yes I new that. In fact I still own a DeWalt "type 1" saw made in Canada. It needs to be repaired but I still have it. My newer DeWalt was made in China. :-[

Two differences, the blade clamp Assemblies are shaped differently. On the type 1 they are more triangle shaped. The blades protrude from the clamps more than on the type 2. No advantage either way.
The second difference is on the type 1 the cast iron table was machined with a smooth surface. On the type 2 it is very rough. A little 220 grit sand paper with WD40 and some elbow grease will fix that.
As far a quality, other than the table machining, no differences.
