How to go about cutting it
« on: October 10, 2010, 09:38:44 am »
Good Day Folks,

I would like to cut the picture in the upper left hand corner http://www.cnwhs.org/  Is there a way I could make it an "ornament" type cut.  Or do you think I should cut out the pieces, and glue them to a backer board and make a plaque.  One day, when my skills are better, I would like to try to make it into a Intarsia project.

Thanks in advance for suggestions,

Steven

Steven, I remembered seeing some Rairoad logos in an old issue of Scrollsaw workshop and went looking for the patterns.  I found them in the 2004 holiday issue (Issue #17).  It has the B&O, Santa Fe, Long Island Railroad and Pennsylvania Railroad.  I know they sell back issues when they are still available.  You might want to check it out.  These are ornament size but you could blow them up to make bigger versions.

If you want to duplicate it to preserve the look of the original then I think a plaque would be best. As an "ornament" type cut you would have to use stencil type letters for the words so you would lose the letterings original look.  8)

Thanks for the tips on the Magazine, wonder if there was a C&NW logo, I will have to check it out.  I will have to read up on creating plaques, any links on information for creating them?  Please share any techniques you may have, or maybe a book I could buy.

Thanks again all for the fast replies and information,

Steven

No, No C&NW logo.  That's what I went looking for.  I remembered seeing RR logos and checked for that one since that what the other thread was about.
As far as your plaque goes, you could do a portrait style, segmentation or intarsia.  Whatever you are interested in an how much time you want to spend making it.

Time is not a concern, I am more worried about my current skills  :D  ;D  I think this is going to be a fun project.

 Steven,

Can't help you on finding a logo for the C&NW but if you do find one I wish you let me know. Still a lot of interest in it locally.

I live about 2 blocks from the old C&NW tracks.... now the UP. Looking at the web site you posted I see they mentioned the M&StL. I live about 1/2 a mile away from where it joined the C&NW. The local C&NW depot was tore down many years ago after they were purchased by the UP, but the M&StL depot is still there altho being used by the UP track crews. As I get it every day 72 trains (coal & freight) go thru town.

  Little later:

Hmmmm! Funny where you can find this stuff. Here's a web address for what your looking for. Should work if you can copy it off.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chicago_and_North_Western_Railway_Logo.svg

BUT better read the info underneath considering the current messages about copywrite on here.

Would be interesting to see what you all think of what's written.

Pete
