hey iv yet another question for you all.

several years ago my wife started maken me use junk wood ( old fence slats, pine, partical bord ect ect)
for my first go at a new pattern this way i wouldent f@&k up on a nice expensive piece of wood. well over the years iv obtained ALOT of pieces that although i would not sell because they usually do have a flaw or two in them but they turned out "ok" i let my daughter take pieces and give them to her freinds or her flavor of the month (boys) and my wife takes some and gives them to co-workers. my question is although it gives me more room. do you guys think its hurting me in sales, should i not give them away, whats your opinion?

I often give items away.  I just gave the post master a collapsible basket shaped like a pumpkin to put candy in up at the counter.  I donate to the local volunteer fire departments when they have silent auctions or door prizes.  Same with churches.  This is free advertising.  Be selective about where you give, if it someplace or someone who will show off your work - it generates business.  Attach a business card to the bottom.  My hairdresser has a business card holder that I made for her.  One of my crosses is at the office supply where I enlarge my patterns.  I live in a small community and people know my work, even if we've never met.

It should improve your sales as people get to here about your work and what you are doing

That is a tough question I have asked myself to. I still give away allot of my work though. I don't think it hurts your sales. 8)

I made an Elks plaque for a friend a few years back. He took it to the local lodge and showed it off. I ended up selling about (10) of them to other members and even one to a Moose lodge. I have Elks plaques down the west coast from Washington to Arizona. Sometimes the best sales come from a gift. The old saying "it takes money to make money" is usually true. I have one I messed up on, if I can find it I will post a picture. They are very easy to make and you can add whatever wording is requested. One hint for you that I learned the hard way, Have it approved before you cut it. That mistake cost me material and time. Mike
