Found a mini treasure troef right on my doorstep
« on: September 03, 2010, 06:06:53 am »
This morning I decided to take my bicycle and go and see a furniture maker some friends told me about. It sits literally a stones throw away from my house and I never even knew it was there. Took me all of 2 minutes to cycle there. I walked into the workshop, where this guy was busy sanding the most beautiful table top, he saw me switch of the sander took of mask and out earplugs. I told him who I was and what I did and if he might have some scrap wood that I could collect in future. He normally cleans out fast he said as the workshop is rather small, but what's there when I come around is mine for the taking. We had a chat about woodwork in general and he wants me to bring around some stuff that I made as he has heard of scrolling but never actually done it or seen much of it. Should have given him my web address.
This afternoon I am going to do more treasire hunting, I need to go th the physiotherapist, but close by him is a yachtbuilding site and a guy that buildt interiors for yachts,so I might just find some more treasure.

That is next on my search list, but as you might know Marcel here up North shipyards and shipbuilding is still alive although it is not as vibrant as it used to be, so I searched and found about 15 ship timber related workshops and small furniture makers close to home. Need to work this list down first see what I got and then see if I really need more places to collect from, my nephew is already scared that he will have to enlarge the house just to stock my wood :P.

I get most of my wood from a guy that makes the most beautiful tables.  He also does custom work for a very upscale community.  He built a building just to house all his wood.  He has been doing all my resawing and planing.  He will even do glue-ups for me.  He has barrels of scrap just for the taking.  I'm so very blessed to have access to him.

I actually talked to him yesterday about supplying our scrollsaw community with custom ordered wood.  He is very interested and will begin working on a website today.  He personally goes to the mills and picks out his lumber so it is always the best available.  Right now, he has in stock: mesquite, pecan, walnut, cocobolo, bacoda, ebony, cypress, and a few varieties that I have never heard of.  Because he deals with such large pieces, (he sometimes does full dining tables out of a single slab) his warehouse of lumber is extensive.  I am in awe at the grain and figure of much of his wood.  He is building a kiln so he will be able to dry his own lumber.
The cool part is he will do custom glue-ups for special projects.  Like the spiral bowl in last month's CWC.  If anyone is interested in something like this, let me know.  He has given me permission to give out his phone # if you would like to talk to him.
