I agree Janet. It is amazing he does that by hand. He has perseverance, patients and determination to do that by hand. Would not even consider doing it.

That was the way ALL scrolling and fret work was done before electricity was invented.
Have you ever seen some really old work done on a piece of furniture?
I watched a demo on TV one time of a guy learning in France to do that type of work the old way. Even intarsha was done like that.

Take a look at the Victorian Gingerbread on houses.  It was popular from say 1880 until the late '20's.  Most was likely made on a treadle saw, and a lot of it was true 4" thick fir.  See San Francisco and Port Townsend for two areas with a lot if surviving gingerbread.
