Image and artwork background

What do you use as a background for your wood art projects. I am especially interested in what makes a good backing for portrait projects. I found this black felt and thought it works well. Will it stand the test of time? Or should I use something else?

I have always used felt also and never had a problem with it.  A couple of small pieces I did about 3 years ago I used some glossy colored paper from a printer store and it has not faded in that time.  It is not in direct sunlight though either.

Hey Ron, The black felt looks fine, but I prefer a wood backing board. I like to use luan plywood. If the luan is dark, oil will bring out the color and grain. If the luan is light, a little stain will darken it. I like a mahogany or cherry stain. I also have used walnut and mahogany ply.

I have used black felt as well as other colors and also have used fabric after raiding the quilting room.

I use Black Felt on Black Felt on my portraits, and also have used Colored Felt, both hold up great, never a problem. Also have painted the backer which also works good. Hope this helps.  Edward

Thank You for all who have helped. I am working on another photo I made a pattern from thanks to all the Youtube video's. I will post a picture of it when I get it finished.
