Dewalt 788 (From US to Italy)
« on: August 02, 2010, 04:28:04 am »
I saw a very good offer from Grizzly.com about a Dewalt 788 + Stand + Lamp for 499 USD.
In Euros is a good price for that scroll saw, a comparable Hegner ScrollSaw costs between 450-800 Euros. A Multicut 2S + Variable speed costs more than 800 Euros...

The main issue is that Dewalt Italy doesn't sell 788 scroll saw... And I will not have any kind of "local" support in case of problems...
At the moment I'm using an economic scroll saw Einhell Blue that use a blade adapter to handle pinless blades. This make internal cuts and fretwork a little bit boring but possible... Looking at Steve video Dewalt has a very quick system to release the blade and it's easy to work with large piece of wood. Using mine sometimes i need to remove the blade to be able to enter into internal entry holes... Anyway for 100 Euros it was the best and also it was a good start to "test" my new hobby (When I was young I used an hand fretwork saw).

Please feel free to post any suggestions of comment on my idea, I still thinking on it waiting for "shipping costs" from Grizzly...

Ciao.

I do not know what problems you would encounter that a local repair person could not address.  However as soon as that is said something will come up.  I would think shipping will be prohibitive though.  It will be interesting to see what they tell you.  Please keep us informed.

The power requirements may not be the same. Here in the states we use 110 volts AC on 60 cycles. I don't know what is used in Italy.

Updates on my case...

Basically Grizzly.com doesn't send packages over 70 lbs. My package is around 90 lbs (Dewalt 788 + metallic stand!)... UPS or FedEX are asking 500 USD for the sending and Grizzly suggest to use a forwarder over the sea... Maybe is cheaper taking an airplane an go to a shop in NY and flight back home.

Then my second try is to buy only a DW788 for 469.95 USD and only 60 lbs!!! I'm waiting for the shipping costs details to make a decision.

Stay tubed...

P.S: Anybody thinking to visit Venice (in Italy!) in next weeks who would like to bring to me a DW788!? I can offer original italian foods home made and travel guide!

Could they send the saw and stand separately?  It seems like it would be worth asking.  Probably still expensive though.

If not, Steve posted plans for a stand on his blog.  Maybe you could use that to build your own stand if you have to go for the saw only.

I wish I could take you up on your offer though!  It would be awesome to visit Venice.  The history, the art....just wow.

Hi drigolin,
Be sure to check what dgman said about the power voltage etc. I wanted a DeDwalt788, but the dealer here in the Netherlands suggested against it as it did not comply with something to de with EU electricty some thing or other, that is de reason he said he does not stoke them. Could just be his excuse for not having them, but I would surely look into it before spending money and not being able to get it to work on EU powernet.

500 USD for sending a Dewalt only...  I'm looking to change my idea and my shortlist is from

http://www.axminster.co.uk/

UK Supplier. Sending in europe is cheaper around 80 Euros for a scrollsaw.
And this provider has Excalibur and an Hegner clone.
Excalibur EX21 is 508 Euros + shipment
Hegner clone is 310 Euros + shipment.

Very good prices! I'm falling in love with Ex21 seems very solid and well designed. Seems also very good for fretwork inserting from top. Then is the blade tilting not the table... But 500 Euros is a little bit over my budget.

Hegner clone is in budget and also this scroll saw is very good for fretwork using a hegner quick blade clamp (25 Euros option).

I still thinking how to do...

Thanks to all for opinions and support...
